The Life of Jacq is a comic strip I’ve had in my head for a couple of years now. It started with a little turtle that I drew one day. Then I imagined what his life was like at the age of 1, 5, 15, and 30 and what parts of it I’d like to tell. At first there was a friend called Carlo. Jacq was the turtle and then there was Carlo an impatient loud rabbit, they represented the two sides of me. Eventually I got rid of the rabbit.
It’s a little autobiographical but when it comes to a comic strip you have to do a lot of editing. Including everything is just no fun for the audience or for me. So I get to pick and choose what to write about and how to draw it. I added in my brother, his real name is Mauricio, but in the strip its Rami (an anagram).
It’s been super fun creating the first three episodes. Here they are for you to enjoy.
The first one was about life, being born and how amazing and numerous the possibilities are:
The second focused on expectations, here we see Jacq waiting on his little brother to be born:
The third strip focused on shattered expectations, what it was like once Jacq’s brother was there in the flesh:
The next ones will focus on sacrifices, immigration, and adapting to a new country. I don’t know when I will make them, but they are living in my head at the moment. I hope to able to share them with you someday.
Finally here’s a finished vector version of Jacq:
