How to Charge More for Your Work

It’s scary. You think the world is gonna swallow you up. That a customer is going to laugh in your face. That you are going to lose out on that client and the money that comes with that commission.

Here’s the thing. It doesn’t matter. That’s a client you don’t want. A client who is focused on price instead of the value of your work.

I’ve spoken with 4 people this week about this very same topic. All of them are creative people, all of them work freelance outside their 9-5pm. The problem is that they charge so little for their amazing work.

If you know the market, you know the value of the quality of work you produce and you are charging less than 50% of the value it hurts. It hurts the market, it hurts you, it hurts the client, and it hurst your work.

The other day one of them came up to me and said “Thank you, just thank you” – I went from this much to charging almost 3x more than before. I’ve lost 1/3 of my clients but I’m still making almost double the money.

It begins with having faith in your skills, then knowing the market, and finally taking the leap and asking for what you are worth. Then wait and here’s the key, be willing to walk away from someone that doesn’t value your work.

Here are the steps again:

  1. Develop your skill set
  2. Know the market price
  3. Ask for the right value
  4. Walk away if needed

I’m writing this mostly for me, but man was I stoked when that guy told me about his recent success!! I was so happy that he started valuing his work and staring fear in the face while he asked for a better rate.

Have an amazing day!!
